How Chronic Infections Can Develop

Inflammatory Response Syndrome (IRS) occurs with long term exposure to molds and their toxic components, called mycotoxins. This can occur through accumulation of ingesting moldy foods over a prolonged period of time, or more commonly, through exposure to molds/mycotoxins from living or working in a water damaged building that facilitates mold growth.

Chronic intestinal infections generally occur through two processes: the consistent consumption of processed foods over a prolonged period of time, or through the use of recurrent antibiotic therapy that disrupts normal intestinal flora. Other potential causes include hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid concentration), which can allow for pathogenic organisms in foods (especially uncooked meats, raw foods) to survive through
the stomach and begin colonization in the intestinal tract. Chronic constipation can also be a causative factor in development of pathogenic species in the intestinal tract from lack of proper elimination, and may cause an increase in migration of bacteria to the small intestine.

Chronic viral infections are generally opportunistic and tend to develop in individuals that either already have another chronic infection present, or demonstrate varying degrees of immune system suppression, chronic insomnia, or chronic stress.

Testing for Chronic Infections

There are many ways to test for chronic infections and this is highly dependent on the
offending pathogen. We will work with you to determine which best test to start with
based on your medical history and overall symptom presentation. Here are some tests that we may recommend:
Nasal swab with culture
Lyme antibody testing
Lyme co-infection panels
Adaptive immune system markers
Mold mycotoxin testing
Comprehensive stool analysis
